Panel backs housekeeping changes to unemployment insurance modernization bill

The Senate Committee on Labor and Technology voted Jan. 29 to pass Senate Bill 716 with technical amendments aimed at clarifying language ahead of a planned modernization of the unemployment insurance system.
Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Director Jade Butay spoke in strong support, telling the committee that the division has been working to "untie the knots" in the unemployment insurance claim process through a call center, an improved web inquiry form and other reforms while the state pursues broader system modernization.
The committee accepted a housekeeping change to language on page 13, line 2 and indicated it would keep the effective date unchanged. The committee recommendation to pass SB 716 with amendments was adopted; Senators Ihara and Moriwaki were recorded as excused.
