The Ardmore Elementary School green team received a $1,000 scholarship from the Saint Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee during its meeting, the committee announced. State Sen. Kevin Hertel, a long-time committee member, said he and the committee "decided today that we wanted to double that to $1,000 for the green team." The committee previously offered $500 group awards; Ardmore’s application won the first student-group scholarship this year.
The award is intended to pay for materials for the students’ environmental projects. Renee, green team coordinator at Ardmore Elementary, told the committee the group plans a vermiculture — worm-farming — composting program and a butterfly garden. "We use [the compost] to fertilize what we plan on doing…a butterfly garden at Ardmore Elementary," she said. The committee posted the scholarship application on its website at www.scswec.org.
Committee members described the scholarship program as part of a long-running effort: the waterfront committee has awarded scholarships to juniors and seniors in St. Clair Shores since 2007 and said it has expanded this year to accept school green-team applications as group scholarships. The committee displayed a ceremonial check at the meeting; the funds will be issued as an endorsed payment the group can deposit.
The committee encouraged other school groups and environmental clubs in St. Clair Shores to apply and noted sponsorships make the awards possible.
The Ardmore green team presentation and the scholarship award occurred during the committee's scholarship segment of the agenda; the committee recorded the application and award details for its scholarship records.
