You’re obligated then to take up the issue of the compensation of all local elected officials.”

Commissioner Jones said the charter produced “a full time council president position, which has to be voted on by the council,” and noted confusion among residents about the period between charter approval and when the commission could act. Commissioners asked whether the at-large council member’s pay should be set separately; Attorney White McDonald said that the commission has discretion to treat at-large and ward-elected members the same or set different pay.
After a motion that “the council president full time salary be $75,000,” commissioners recorded a roll-call vote with five yeas and no noes; the motion passed. The commission also reviewed supporting materials, including a Pontiac employee compensation schedule described as current “as of January 25, 2025.”
Members signaled plans for at least one additional meeting to consider related questions — including whether the at-large council seat should have a different salary — and to develop a process or toolkit for future compensation work. Commissioners emphasized Open Meetings Act compliance for any follow-up work and said staff and legal counsel would provide materials for subsequent sessions.
