Planning staff outlines master plan timeline; public review to follow city council resolution

City planning staff updated the Zoning Board of Appeals on the status of Pontiac’s draft master plan, saying the Planning Commission moved to support the draft and will forward it to city council.
Staff said if city council adopts the supporting resolution at its next meeting, the plan will be published at the master-plan website and a public-review process will run from the Feb. 4 city council meeting through at least mid-April. Staff described extensive public engagement during plan preparation, including community sessions and targeted outreach, and said the document will inform a future zoning-code update and other implementation steps.
The presentation noted the plan is lengthy — about 200 pages — and highlighted the future land-use map as a key product that will inform any later rezoning. Staff said a recommended next step is an RFP to retain a consultant to rewrite the zoning ordinance, possibly issued in May, and that the city may form a committee that could include ZBA members to help guide the code update.
Staff also said materials will be posted on the plan website and that the municipal planning office will hold a webinar to explain how to view the draft and provide feedback. The department expects to present an annual report and to fill a Planner I position in the coming weeks.
