The Planning and Zoning Board on Jan. 29 approved an extension of a variance that had been granted June 27, 2023 for an addition at 5940 Southwest 12th Street. The extension allows the applicant additional time to submit building-permit drawings after the variance lapsed before a building permit could be filed.
Applicant Javier (spelled in filings as both "Cayenne" and later spoken as "Calle") said he had difficulty finding an architect and experienced family delays that stalled progress. Staff explained the city's ordinance requires applicants to apply for a building permit within 90 days of a variance; a shorter extension can be granted administratively by the city manager, but because more than a year had passed the board needed to act. Staff said the original plans were located but that meeting minutes from the June 2023 hearing were not readily available in staff records.
A board member said he saw no objection to re-approving the extension given the prior approval, and another member noted a statutory process that could have been used for a longer extension. The board voted to approve the extension by roll call.
