Haven of Rest tells commission warming centers and shelter network served thousands in 2024

Dan Jones of the Haven of Rest briefed the Battle Creek City Commission on Jan. 21 about the shelter’s 2024 operations and ongoing warming-center efforts as the city faced extreme cold.
Jones gave service totals for 2024 and described warming centers that open "whenever the temperature reaches 20 degrees Fahrenheit or below." He said, "the haven of rest provided 37,586 bed nights of shelter" in 2024, "we served 1713 unique individuals," and the shelter kitchen served "87,450 meals in 2024." Jones emphasized that warming centers operate at the men’s shelter and at an InnMismatch house for families and that people not checked into shelters can still walk in when the threshold temperature is met.
He described outreach to people sleeping near First United Methodist Church and partnerships with local congregations and the Share Center. Jones thanked the city, donors and volunteers and asked the city to deepen partnerships as warming-center demand continues in cold weather.
Commissioners offered brief thanks and no questions; Commissioner Patrick later urged residents to take cold-weather precautions and thanked Jones for the presentation. Jones’s presentation preceded the public-hearing items on housing and other business on the agenda.
