Officials say New Century Airport development on pace as VanTrust builds new spec facility

“We are on schedule, and actually we're ahead of schedule,” Johnson said of the east-side development and of the spec building known as G2, which he said is under construction and being marketed for lease. He added that buildings already under lease generate “a little less than $250,000 annually” in revenue for the airport.
County Manager Penny Postoak Ferguson introduced the presentation and later commissioners discussed the airport’s long-term financial goals. Johnson said the airport is being advanced “to bring the airport back to being self sufficient financially” but characterized that goal as incremental: “It's it's yes, no, and it depends,” he said, adding staff will formalize more detailed financial reporting for the board.
Chairman Mike Kelly emphasized the airport’s broader economic role during the meeting, citing an earlier report that said the airport produces roughly $1,100,000,000 in annual economic impact to Johnson County. Commissioners noted new buildings under development and the potential for additional private-sector leases to increase airport revenues.
Separately, Commissioner Janae Hanzlick reported that the Mid-America Regional Council approved $2,000,000 in Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds for a pilot rapid-bus service to connect the Kansas City International Airport and the Overland Park Convention Center during the World Cup; commissioners said the pilot could support regional transportation access during the event and possibly continue afterward.
No formal board action was taken on airport property or contracts during the session; staff said they will return with updates and more detailed financial information as development proceeds.
