House recommits HB 55 to judiciary, confirms journal and adopts privileged resolutions

The Georgia House of Representatives on Jan. 30 recommitted House Bill 55 to the Judiciary Committee, dispensed with the reading of the previous day’s journal and adopted a slate of privileged resolutions, the chamber’s presiding officers said.

On a motion introduced from the floor, Chairman Gunther called for the bill to be sent back to committee. “I move to recommit house bill 55 to the judiciary committee,” Chairman Gunther said on the House floor, and the motion was handled without recorded opposition.

The move affects a bill captioned in the chamber as “an act to amend code section 1562 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated relating to the number of judges of superior courts,” which the clerk read before the motion to recommit. Chairman Hilton reported the journal of the previous legislative day had been reviewed and “found to be correct.” The House agreed to dispense with the reading and to confirm the journal by unanimous consent.

Members also adopted a group of privileged resolutions presented by the clerk, including recognitions and authorizations affecting state property and study committees. The clerk read the resolutions and the speaker asked if there was any objection; none was voiced and the resolutions were adopted.

Majority Leader F. Strachan moved that the House stand adjourned until 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025. The chamber approved that motion by voice vote.

Many bills were introduced for first reading and many more were called for second reading during the session; those introductions were read into the record by the clerk but were not debated to final action on Jan. 30.

The actions on the floor were handled primarily by voice votes or unanimous consent; no roll-call vote tallies were recorded in the transcript for the measures described above.
