The House Transportation Committee on Tuesday reported House Bill 17-93 with a substitute, advancing legislation to name the Interstate 264 bridge over South Rosemont Road in Virginia Beach for the late Captain Matthew Chevarotti.
The bill’s sponsor, Delegate Faggins, told the committee the substitute corrects a drafting error on the bridge’s location and described Captain Chevarotti’s 20 years of service with the Virginia Beach Fire Department and 16 years on FEMA Task Force 2. “He was more than a firefighter. He was a husband, a father, a leader, a mentor,” Delegate Faggins said, asking the committee to approve the naming.
The bill drew remarks from the Virginia Beach fire chief and Captain Chevarotti’s family. The fire chief told the committee the Virginia Beach City Council has endorsed the designation and the city will pay for the sign and installation. Sarah Chevarotti, the captain’s widow, described the family’s medical and treatment history and asked the committee to honor his memory with the memorial designation.
Committee members offered brief remarks in support; one member asked the members to rise for a moment of silence before the final vote. The motion to report the bill with the substitute was moved and seconded; the clerk closed the roll and the committee passed the bill unanimously. The chair thanked the family and community members in attendance.
The bill now moves forward with the committee’s endorsement to the next stage of the legislative process.
