Summary
Superintendent Peter told the Milton School Committee that PowerSchool reported a vendor data breach that may affect districts nationwide; the district said it does not store Social Security numbers in PowerSchool and had notified families.
Superintendent Peter told the Milton School Committee that PowerSchool, the district’s student information vendor, reported a data incident and that Milton Public Schools notified families after the district learned of the problem.
Peter said the district’s internal systems were not breached but that PowerSchool reported a nationwide incident detected late the previous day. PowerSchool described the intruder as a “threat actor” and indicated the company believed the incident was contained. Peter said the vendor told districts it had engaged with the threat actor and believed data had been deleted. The district said it would share additional information if PowerSchool provides updates.
Peter said Milton does not store Social Security numbers in PowerSchool, and therefore these identifiers were not at risk through the district’s instance. The district emailed families about what it knew roughly an hour before the committee meeting and planned to provide further information if and when PowerSchool shared more detail.
Committee members did not ask for immediate action beyond continuing to monitor the vendor’s communications; Peter said the district would follow up with families as necessary.
