Millis permanent building committee readies phased roof, masonry and fascia repairs for bidding
Summary
The Town of Millis Permanent Building Committee reviewed a draft scope Jan. 22 for phased roof, fascia, gutter and masonry repairs at a municipal building and directed staff to finalize the bid package. The work will be phased so the top (turret and roof) is made watertight first, then lower masonry and siding work will follow as funding allows.

The Town of Millis Permanent Building Committee reviewed a proposed scope of work Jan. 22 for roof, fascia, gutter and masonry repairs and cleared the draft to be finalized for public bidding.
Committee members discussed phasing the work so the upper portion of the building (including the turret and roofline) is repaired first to make the structure watertight. The committee intends to bid masonry repairs as a package for upper and lower work, perform the upper work first, then evaluate remaining funds before proceeding with lower‑level masonry and siding repairs. Members discussed painting and cleaning some overhangs rather than fully covering them as a lower‑cost alternative.
The committee also agreed to install security lighting to discourage loitering near the building and to clean the fire escape; removing the fire escape was not pursued because it would add cost and could be needed if occupancy changes. The committee asked for review comments on the draft scope to be returned within one week so the town administrator’s office can issue the bid package. No formal votes on contracts were taken at the Jan. 22 meeting.
The committee plans to advertise the work for public bids after finalizing the scope and will review incoming proposals and costs to set the project schedule and phasing.
