The Revere City Council denied a petition from National Grid to install a stub pole and associated sidewalk guy wire on Wilson Street during the Jan. 27 meeting.
Petra Ichika, representing National Grid, described the request as installation of a stub pole (numbered in Petitions as 659-1/65-1) to support a pole-to-pole guy wire and a sidewalk guy to balance tensile forces and prevent a nearby pole from leaning. National Grid said the work is intended to stabilize an existing leaning pole and balance tensile loads caused by multiple utility attachments.
Residents and several councilors opposed the installation. Councilor McKenna, whose ward includes the site, said the pole should be replaced rather than adding a second pole as a "Band-Aid." Several councilors said they had been dealing with similar pole problems for years and urged National Grid to seek a more permanent solution.
After discussion, the council held a roll-call vote on the petition. The clerk recorded unanimous "no" votes from councilors present and announced, "the petition by National Grid for Wilson Street has been denied." No alternate plan or conditional approval was recorded during the meeting.
The council did not refer the petition to a subcommittee; the immediate denial ends the request as presented that night. National Grid representatives indicated the replacement of an existing pole was also planned, but councilors said they wanted a fuller plan brought back rather than immediate installation of a stub pole.
