NORWOOD, Mass. — The Norwood Airport Commission on Jan. 29 received an update on multiple airport projects and approved an FAA payment requisition tied to design work for runway 17/35.
Du Bois & King representative Mark (last name not provided) told the commission the runway 10/28 reconstruction is complete and final FAA closeout paperwork should be submitted soon. He said the firm has submitted 90% design documents for a new perimeter fence and will schedule a joint review with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration and airport staff in early February. He also said the firm is revising plans for a runway 17/35 extension to incorporate FAA medium-intensity approach lighting system (MALS) design comments and expects to submit a 90% package in February.
The consultant said the runway 17/35 extension increased the safety-area length by 300 feet, requiring the first two MALS stations to be installed in pavement and triggering a redesign to reroute lighting outside pavement and to add cable runs.
Why it matters: the projects affect airfield safety and FAA funding eligibility. Changes to the lighting layout can affect construction methods and costs and must meet FAA design guidance.
Commission business: the commission voted to approve Payment Requisition No. 4 for AIP number 3-25-0037-49-0 (2024 FAA repayment request number 4) for the runway 17/35 reconstruction design in the amount of $65,095.70. The commission record shows the motion was made by Commissioner John (last name not specified) and seconded by Commissioner Mike (last name not specified). Commissioners on the record voted “yes.” The requisition is described during the meeting as 90% FAA reimbursement and 10% Town of Norwood responsibility.
Commissioners also discussed the perimeter fence design and noted the Conservation Commission had issued an order of conditions that the design team incorporated; the consultant said one area of endangered flora near the south end may require avoidance and will be discussed at the 90% review.
Airport staff confirmed the fence being replaced is over 20 years old and has sections that no longer exist; the new fence will be set close to the runways and taxiways to keep wildlife off pavement.
No cost breakdown beyond the $65,095.70 requisition or a construction schedule were given during the update; staff said more detailed estimates and the 90% documents will be reviewed in February.
Ending: The commission scheduled the next design reviews with state and federal reviewers and authorized the payment requisition so the consultant can continue design work for runway 17/35.
