Commission approves Onalaska High School PUD change to remove 10 parking stalls to improve dismissal flow

The Onalaska Plan Commission approved Jan. 28 a planned unit development amendment that reduces the Onalaska High School parking count by 10 stalls to improve interactions between student vehicles and bus traffic at the Hilltopper Drive exit.
The amendment affects the high school campus at 700 Wilson Street (tax parcel 18-967-0). City staff told the commission the site serves a secondary school, gymnasium, stadium and performance center; earlier redevelopment had proposed 453 stalls and the current request reduces the southern entrance total by 10 stalls. Staff said prior action by the Common Council found daily parking needs met and that off-street parking, including street parking for events, remained adequate.
Mike Milkey moved to approve the PUD amendment with ten staff conditions; Bill Lethen seconded. Commissioner Eric Archer recused himself from the discussion. Jared Holter, city staff, said he worked with the school's engineer and supported the design, and commissioners noted available street parking for special events. The motion passed with all eligible commissioners voting in favor and one recorded abstention (recusal by Archer).
