Council discusses encampment cleanup, methadone-clinic waste concerns; code-enforcement hearings postponed

Councilwoman Newman asked for updates on a property and a methadone clinic where she said syringes had been left in a backyard and later placed in garbage bags. A city staff member (identified in the meeting as chief/staff) said biohazard waste must be handled as controlled waste and suggested the material likely originated at the clinic when a dumpster was not secured; the same staff member said the code officer would inspect the site the next day. Council and staff also said Cotton Forest crews had cleared brush from Pass Road to the Front Beach and that the planned police substation in that area may not be needed after the cleanup.
Separately, the council postponed all scheduled code-enforcement hearings until the next council meeting (rescheduled to Tuesday, Jan. 28), and staff said they would continue follow-up inspections at problem properties. No council action beyond inspection direction and the rescheduling of hearings was recorded.
