Three county piers replaced; staff says $1.4 million spent, mostly state grant funds

David Wyler, a department staff member overseeing projects, told the advisory board that three pier replacement projects — River Springs, Fox Harbor and Saint George’s Island — are complete and that Saint George’s finished the same week of the meeting.
Wyler reported that most of the pier-replacement work in the last 13 years has been completed and that Piney Point Landing remains the only pier slated for replacement in the future; he estimated a rough, cumulative cost of about $1,400,000 for the pier work to date and said most funding came from state waterway improvement grants.
Wyler praised the contractor’s workmanship and said the county expects to move into a routine maintenance phase for most piers once Piney Point is addressed, which he estimated would occur in about a year.
The update was provided as part of broader facilities work staff have completed this winter, including painting and indoor maintenance tasks to support recreation division operations on inclement-weather days.
Wyler’s report reiterated that state grant funding has been a primary source for the pier projects to date, allowing the county to improve waterfront access without relying solely on local funds.
