Senate unanimously adopts resolution recognizing Mississippi optometrist as AOA president

The Mississippi State Senate on Wednesday adopted a resolution congratulating Doctor Reed, a Mississippi optometrist, after senators called him to the chamber to mark his election as president of the American Optometric Association.
Senator Kirby introduced the resolution and Senator Parker spoke at length about Reed’s professional history and long involvement with the optometric association, saying Reed worked "tireless[ly]" over more than a decade to rise from association board member to president. Parker asked the Senate to support the resolution, noting Reed’s role as a first for Mississippi.
The resolution passed by unanimous consent after the presiding officer asked whether anyone objected to using the morning roll call procedure for final passage and none were recorded. Senator Kirby moved final passage; no recorded roll-call tally was read.
Doctor Reed accepted the recognition and addressed the Senate. He thanked members for the acknowledgement and told senators that past state policy changes had broadened the scope of optometry practice in Mississippi. "You put us in the top 10% of states," Reed said, adding that those changes had allowed Mississippi optometrists to provide more care locally and influenced practice in other states. He thanked the Senate for the recognition.
The resolution and Reed’s remarks were presented while numerous members of the Mississippi Optometric Association attended the session; senators introduced several association members seated in the gallery during earlier introductions. The Senate then resumed its calendar business after the recognition.
