Committee approves bill to criminalize malicious AI-generated impersonation

"This bill is identical to the bill that we passed in the Senate last year," Senator Johnson said. Under the bill as described, non-sexual impersonation offenses would be misdemeanors; sexualized or more serious impersonations by someone over age 21 would be felonies. The measure also contains a set of exemptions, Senator Johnson said, including reporting of misconduct, legal proceedings and satire.
Senators asked clarifying questions; Senator Norwood asked whether the bill was related to another pending bill and Johnson noted the measures address different code sections. The committee voted to advance the bill; the transcript records a voice vote with the chair announcing the ayes had it.
