Senate adopts resolution scheduling governor—s State of the State; committee calendar set, recess called

The Senate adopted a resolution scheduling the governor—s State of the State address for 5 p.m. tomorrow on the South Steps, the chamber—s presiding officer announced. The measure was adopted unanimously by use of the morning roll call.
Senator Kirby introduced the resolution and moved for its final passage, saying the item was simply a resolution to request the governor—s appearance on the South Steps. The motion carried without recorded opposition, and senators then retained items 3 through 16 on the calendar for future consideration.
The action came amid remarks that nearly 900 bills have been assigned to the Senate this session, and senators were reminded of an intensive committee schedule over the next several days. Senators announced a long list of committee meetings, including joint meetings of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks with the Energy Committee; Medicaid and Finance; Judiciary sessions; Veterans and Military Affairs; Labor; Tourism; Highways and Transportation; and others. Several senators named times and rooms for those meetings on the record.
Senator Black moved to dispense with the reading of the journal and the motion passed by voice vote. Senator Blackwell moved to dispense with the reading of committee reports and the titles of bills and resolutions; both motions passed by voice vote.
Senator Kirby also called for a Rules Committee meeting in front of the chamber. Later, Senator Blackwell moved that the Senate stand in recess until 5 p.m. or until the last committee report is filed, at which point the journal would reflect adjournment until 10 a.m. the following day; that motion passed and the Senate recessed.
Other items noted on the floor included introductions of visiting groups — the Mississippi Truckers Association leadership class and members of the Mississippi State Medical Association — and the naming of doctors of the day from the state health department and Forrest General Hospital. Several senators requested adjournment in memory of residents and staff who recently died.
With a heavy calendar and numerous committee meetings scheduled, the Senate recessed to permit committees to meet and report back before the final adjournment recorded in the journal.
