County recognizes local coach and athlete with Mid-Atlantic Good Sports awards

St. Mary's County Recreation and Parks staff and board members presented certificates to coach Richard Abel and athlete Veronica Peters during the Feb. 8 Recreation and Parks Board meeting for recognition at the Mid-Atlantic Good Sports awards in Annapolis.
Staff said Richard Abel has coached youth sports in St. Mary's County for about 17 years across T-ball, youth basketball, football and soccer and was recognized for promoting sportsmanship and teamwork. Veronica Peters, a sophomore at Leonardtown High School, was recognized for leadership and participation in softball, basketball and volleyball programs. Kenny Southern, the county sports coordinator, and Arthur Shepherd introduced the recipients. Board members presented certificates and thanked them for their contributions to youth sports.
The recognition was described as part of the county’s efforts to highlight positive behavior and safe environments in youth sports; staff said the Mid-Atlantic Recreation Park Sports Alliance organized the awards.
