The committee asked transportation staff to work with the city’s bike-share operator to study a targeted expansion of shared bicycles and docking capacity around the convention center and offsite hotels.
Jose Gonzalez, Transportation and Mobility Director, reported the DecoBike program currently supports roughly 1.1k bikes and about 1.2 million rides annually (staff cited higher recent ride counts during public comment). A recently negotiated contract amendment extends the vendor relationship and increases the e‑bike inventory modestly; the current contract cap was described as approximately 1,200 bicycles and would require amendment for major growth.
Commissioners asked staff to coordinate with major convention hotels and with DecoBike to determine where additional docks and non-operator docks (to accept bikes from other rental fleets) would be most effective and to identify how to avoid competing duplicative services. The committee requested staff return with a targeted expansion plan and docking strategy within roughly 60 days so the city can evaluate options for next season and the large convention calendar.
Transportation staff said conversations with CitiBike/DecoBike had already started and agreed to return with a plan identifying high-demand locations and the steps required to expand dock capacity and coordinate with hotel operators and private rental providers.
