Council approves first reading to raise parking fines, including handicap penalties

The South Lyon City Council approved on first reading an amendment to Chapter 90, Article 3, Section 9‑72 to raise several parking fines.
Police Chief Bakke introduced the amendment, proposing handicap parking fines increase from $100 to $125 if paid within seven days and to $150 if paid after seven days. All other parking violations would increase from $10 to $25 if paid within seven days and to $30 thereafter. Chief Bakke said the department compared South Lyon’s fines with nearby communities including Wixom, Novi, Milford and Brighton and concluded the city’s fines were lower than many peers.
Council member Mosier moved to approve the first reading; Council member Kibble seconded. Council approved the first reading by roll call; the ordinance will return for a second reading and final adoption at a subsequent meeting.
In the discussion, Bakke said the city relies most heavily on parking enforcement during snow emergencies and that the department prefers education and outreach before issuing citations; officers will typically warn residents and knock on doors before issuing tickets during storms. The chief said the city does not generally tow vehicles for snow events and noted the last fine increase had not occurred during his tenure.
