Alderbrook green-infrastructure project to be presented to Needham working group Feb. 4

The Town of Needham Stormwater Bylaw Working Group on Jan. 29 added a presentation on the Alderbrook green-infrastructure pilot to its agenda for the Feb. 4 meeting.

Why it matters: The Alderbrook project, selected for grant funding by the Charles River Watershed Association and supported by a Coastal Zone Management (CZM) grant, installs green infrastructure in the DeFazio Field parking/gravel area to address localized flooding and provide pollutant-reduction benefits. The project provides an example of an on-the-ground solution the bylaw aims to encourage and may inform technical guidance and prioritization.

Tom Ryder and other members described the scope in brief: the project will install green-infrastructure features in the gravel parking lot next to DeFazio Field to address flooding and add storage capacity. Gabby and Julie from the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) are scheduled to present next week; the working group expects a 10–15 minute informational presentation focused on project purpose, design and long-term goals. Members noted that grant requirements include outreach and presentations to relevant boards and committees.

The working group also discussed the broader grant context: the funding came via the Coastal Zone Management division (a federal grant program administered at the state level) and CRWA support. Members flagged that federal grant funding availability can change and that the group should be ready to describe funding contingencies if asked at public meetings.

Next step: the Alderbrook project team will present to the working group on Feb. 4; the group asked that the presentation be concise and that project representatives provide basic materials for the public and for other town departments to review.
