Delegate Mundon King introduced House Bill 2384, a short bill permitting localities with combined rescue squads to retain rescue-squad lettering on vehicles and apparatus larger than the lettering of the county EMS agency. The sponsor said the change responds to regulatory shifts from the DEA and is intended to prevent significant relettering costs for local volunteer squads.
Devin Cabot, speaking on behalf of Prince William County, said the county sought the measure so volunteer squads could retain identity and logos on their apparatus. Ed Rhodes of the Virginia Association of Rescue Squads testified in opposition, saying the issue could be resolved administratively through the Office of EMS and warning that regulatory sections of the code are being renumbered; he urged applicants to use the administrative process rather than statutory carve-outs.
The committee moved and seconded a motion to report the bill; the clerk closed the roll with a 5-0 vote. The bill will be heard in full Transportation Committee without the sponsor needing to attend the next hearing, per committee guidance.
