The committee voted to forward a proposed agreement authorizing Federal Way police officers to provide extra-duty policing services for Pierce Transit sites within the city through Dec. 31, 2026. Staff said the arrangement has been in place since 2018 and covers off-duty (overtime) assignments at transit centers, bus stops, parking garages and related facilities inside Federal Way. Officers working extra duty will be in uniform; dispatch procedures described by staff call for on-duty officers to provide backup if needed. The city stated there is no net cost to the city because Pierce Transit pays overtime and the revenue is credited to the contracted police security budget line.
Committee members asked about operational details, vehicle use, backup protocols, the methodology for calculating the $105 hourly charge, and whether administrative overhead is included. Staff said commander-level personnel would provide a follow-up with a breakdown of costs and how overtime pay flows to officers and the department.
Motion and referral: the committee voted to forward the proposed agreement with Pierce Transit to the Feb. 4, 2025 consent agenda for City Council approval.
