The committee voted to forward acceptance of a $150,000 gun-violence prevention grant from the Washington State Attorney Generals Office to the City Council for approval. Commander Kerry Murphy of the Federal Way Police Department presented the request and outlined how the city would use the funds.
Murphy said his revised proposal allocates $100,000 to purchase approximately 600 small gun safes for public distribution and $50,000 for a gun buyback program, including payments for high-capacity magazines. The police department described prior buybacks and said the earlier $25,000 buyback was quickly exhausted; the larger allocation is intended to increase capacity and might be used in one or multiple events.
Committee members asked for details about buyback logistics, past participation and compensation levels. Murphy said the department would provide more detailed records from prior buybacks, including per-firearm payments and exact counts, and that all confiscated firearms and magazines would be destroyed. He said the department had considered long-gun safes and local procurement but had not finalized vendor choices or distribution rules.
Motion and referral: a motion to forward acceptance of the Washington State Attorney Generals Office Gun Violence Prevention Grant to the Feb. 4, 2025 consent agenda for council approval was moved, seconded, and approved by the committee.
