Elections office readies September and November municipal dates; council refers polling-place designations to full council

The Fall River elections department briefed the City Council about polling-place changes and operational lessons from recent elections and clarified logistics for the proposed 2025 preliminary (Sept. 16) and municipal (Nov. 4) dates.

Ryan Lyons, the election department head, said the precinct consolidations implemented in 2024 represented the first significant precinct changes in about 20 years and that the November 2024 municipal election “went very smoothly.” Lyons told councilors that moving polling activity to the front of Bristol Community College and reserving parking improved access; he said police were stationed at the campus entrance and that lot arrangements reduced earlier congestion.

Councilors raised concerns that college parking enforcement and campus police tickets caused confusion for some voters in 2024; Lyons said he would coordinate additional signage and work with the college facilities director to reduce incidents. He also told councilors that polling-place rental rates are set by the host locations and that the city signs annual (year-to-year) agreements once the council adopts the orders naming places.

Councilors moved and approved a referral to the full council for adoption of the orders authorizing the preliminary and municipal election dates and designating polling places. The committee voted to refer those orders to the full council to finalize site designations and rental agreements.
