Resident urges Marion County to study pedestrian bridge near courthouse

David Beam, who identified himself as a spokesman for people with disabilities, used the public comment period at the Marion County Board of Commissioners meeting on Jan. 8, 2025 to urge the board to consider a pedestrian bridge to improve safety near the county courthouse.
"People get across the street, because somebody's gonna get really hurt one of these times," Beam said, arguing a bridge would make it safer for people traveling to the courthouse and county offices. He asked the board to "look at that for the next budget," and said he is working with Salem’s incoming mayor on the issue.
The chair thanked Beam for his remarks. Commissioners did not take formal action on the request during the Jan. 8 meeting; Beam said he would attend the mayor’s swearing-in and would continue work on the proposal.
