Marion County sets 30 mph speed limit on portion of Sunset Hills Drive south of Turner

Marion County commissioners on Jan. 15 approved an order establishing a 30 mph speed limit on a portion of Sunset Hills Drive southeast, located south of the city of Turner.
Lonnie Radke of Marion County Public Works told the board the county received a request from a property owner seeking a 25 mph limit. The county conducted a speed study after receiving delegated authority from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for low-volume roads. Radke said the road qualifies as low-volume, with fewer than 400 vehicles per day, and the study supported 30 mph as the appropriate posted limit.
Radke outlined the broader context: House Bill 3188 (2023) authorized certain counties to set speed limits but required training and a phased process coordinated with ODOT. "We requested the authority from ODOT, and we were granted that, and we conducted our speed study," Radke said. Commissioners praised the Public Works staff for completing the first speed-limit setting procedure the county has implemented under the new authority.
A commissioner moved approval of the order and a second commissioner seconded; the board voted unanimously to adopt the new speed limit. Commissioners asked staff to maintain consistency with ODOT methods and to provide additional speed studies under ODOT oversight as required.
