Committee approves robotics and Europe trips, accepts $20,880 language-proficiency grant

Hingham — The School Committee on Monday approved two student travel requests and accepted a $20,880 state grant to support world-language proficiency testing.
Robotics trip approval
The committee authorized Hingham High School’s FIRST Robotics team to travel to the University of Rhode Island for a district competition March 14–15, 2025. Paul Flanagan, Hingham High chemistry teacher and head robotics coach, told the committee the Friday–Saturday schedule requires a Friday morning bus for the team so students can compete in preliminary rounds and return Friday evening, with a second trip Saturday for the second-day matches.
Europe trip approval
The committee also approved a proposed April 2026 trip for high-school students to Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. Teachers explained the itinerary includes instructional visits (including the Anne Frank House and a chocolate workshop in Brussels) and that chaperones will be added as student enrollment in the trip increases.
World-language proficiency grant
The committee accepted a $20,880 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to purchase language-proficiency tests used to evaluate program growth and to support student eligibility for the Seal of Biliteracy. Staff said the tests will allow the district to track outcomes and recognize student proficiency.

All three actions passed on roll-call votes: robotics trip, Europe trip, and the DESE proficiency grant acceptance.
