Charlton administrator: fire-station bids look favorable; budget process begins; house-numbering policy draft coming

The Town Administrator updated the Board of Selectmen on Jan. 28 about several town-administration items: bids for the proposed fire station, the municipal budget schedule and a draft house-numbering policy.
The administrator said general contractor bids for the fire station project were received the day before and remain under review with the project architect; initial impressions were that the bids "do look very favorable," and the administrator said the committee will receive a recommended contract after due diligence and review. The board did not take action on the bids at this meeting.
On the budget, the administrator said Governor Maura Healey had released her proposal, prompting town staff to begin the local budget process in earnest; the administrator said the town would meet with schools within the next week to discuss their requests and that insurance costs and school spending would likely be key budget pressures this year. No budget decisions were made at the Jan. 28 meeting.
Regarding house numbering, the administrator reminded the board that a bylaw change approved at the fall town meeting authorized the board to adopt a policy for numbering new homes and changing existing numbers when necessary for public-safety reasons. A draft policy has been prepared and will be brought to a future selectmen meeting for review and possible adoption.
