Kansas Senate committee hears debate on temporary weight exemptions for grain haulers

Senator Peck, sponsor of Senate Bill 17, told the Senate Transportation Committee on the bill’s hearing day that the measure "would exempt haulers of grain and other agriculture products from certain weight limitations during harvest." The bill would allow a variance of 10% over statutory gross-weight limits for vehicles with tandem, triple or quad rear axles and 12.5% for single-rear-axle vehicles, with an overall cap of £90,000 and a 50-mile limit from field to storage, market or stockpile.

The bill’s supporters framed the change as a targeted, seasonal fix for harvest logistics and a response to repeated complaints from producers who said motor-carrier inspectors issued citations as trucks left fields. "That's a pretty reasonable bill on its face," Randy Stuckey of the Kansas Grain and Feed Association told the committee, calling similar rules in about 25 other states "good public policy."
