The McAllen Independent School District Board of Trustees on Jan. 28 voted to order an election for trustee places 3, 6 and 7 on May 3, 2025, approved personnel recommendations and accepted several routine items including a $95,600 donation for playground pavers and turf at Dr. Pablo Perez Elementary.
The actions give the district authority to proceed with polling locations and other election logistics, formalize human-resources appointments recommended in closed session and alter the effective date of a previously approved amendment to the superintendent’s contract.
Administration recommended the election resolution and human-resources actions. Miss Lorena Garcia, deputy superintendent for business and operations, presented financial and tax collection reports earlier in the meeting; Dr. Canales, chief human resources officer, was available to answer questions on the election resolution.
On the superintendent’s contract, Trustee Rivera moved to rescind the board’s prior contract amendment that had included a one-year extension and a salary increase effective July 1, 2025, and to approve the same amendment with the salary increase effective Jan. 17, 2025. Trustee Dela Garza Lopez seconded that motion; the motion carried 4-2.
Other motions the board approved by unanimous or near‑unanimous voice votes included a proclamation designating January 2025 as School Board Recognition Month; the acceptance of a $95,600 donation from the PTO at Dr. Pablo Perez Elementary for pavers and artificial turf; approval of the consent agenda (items 7A–7E); designation of district investment officers and independent training sources for required investment training; and approval of meeting minutes. Human-resources recommendations submitted under separate cover were approved after closed-session discussion.
