Assistant and instructional leaders told the Methuen School Committee that Blue Engine co-teaching work at the high school is moving into deeper coaching cycles and that the district is expanding two related student-support programs.
Blue Engine: District staff said co-teaching pairs at the high school have completed full feedback cycles and regular consultant visits, and that the program is developing model pairs who can demonstrate inclusive teaching strategies. The district is supporting administrators to draft a shared vision of co-teaching roles and responsibilities.
I DECIDE and CPS coaches: The district has begun I DECIDE sessions (after-school and weekend cohorts) for students referred for substance-use infractions, funded by MPS revenue or grants, and reported three cohorts covering grades 5–12. The district also said collaborative problem solving (CPS) training for staff is in its final phase; between 12 and 15 staff members (teachers, counselors, administrators and other staff) are expected to complete the train-the-trainer certification so they can serve as internal CPS coaches.
Why it matters: Committee members described positive anecdotal results. One member said co-teaching strategies have been used successfully to adapt lessons for sub-separate students and to bring general-education curricular content into special-education settings.
Process and next steps: District staff said the Blue Engine work includes regular classroom planning, supervisor check-ins and targeted coaching. CPS-certified staff will support broader capacity-building using a trainer-of-trainers model. The district flagged that evidence of program impact will continue to be monitored and reported in future updates.
Ending: School leaders said the programs aim to build sustainable capacity so classroom teachers and related-service staff can better meet diverse student needs.
