The Community Preservation Committee reviewed a Step 2 application on Jan. 15 from project representatives for fencing and site-completion work at the Wood Street ball field.
Project presenters said the application covers back-stop extensions, netting for batting cages, two batting cages, a small playground area and signage; part of Old Wood Street is a private road, and fencing is needed to reduce balls entering adjacent yards. Presenters and committee members discussed that much of the project build-up to date was supported by donations and volunteer labor rather than town budget allocations.
Committee member Tracy asked whether the park department had contributed any cash match; presenters said the work to date is largely in-kind (labor and donated materials) and no town budget line had been used. Judy noted that donated labor and materials are acceptable as in-kind matches for grant accounting. Presenters estimated that, if the committee funds the project at a special town meeting, the work could be completed by May 2025 but noted that final scheduling depends on contractor availability.
The committee confirmed it will take a formal funding vote at its February meeting and asked for any outstanding documentation of in-kind contributions, anticipated contractor bids and a clear schedule tied to youth-league seasons.
