Logansport Fire Department cleared to use two soon-to-be-demolished buildings for training

The Logansport Board of Works and Safety voted Jan. 29 to allow the Logansport Fire Department to use two properties slated for demolition — 720 Biddle Street and 916 Race Street — for hands-on firefighter training, Chief Miller said during the meeting.
Chief Miller said the building commissioner and the city inspector have worked with property owners to create a permission-slip contract; he said the document was reviewed with the city’s insurance and ‘‘ran through Mr. Lehman’’ before being presented to the board. The slips have been signed by the property owners and the fire chief, Chief Miller told the board.
The training described by Chief Miller will not include live controlled burns. The department said the planned activities are limited to forcible-entry drills, cutting holes in roofs and walls, and other skills that firefighters normally practice under fire conditions but cannot safely rehearse on occupied structures. Chief Miller said the department will not conduct live fire in the structures and that the properties will be torn down afterward.
Board members asked how often the department had been able to run similar training; Chief Miller said the department had done such exercises in the past but not recently. The board approved adding the permission-slip item to the agenda earlier in the meeting and then approved the use permits during the regular business portion. The voice vote was recorded as unanimous by the two members present, Chris Martin and Levi Jones.
Ending: With the permission slips approved, the fire department may schedule hands-on training at the two addresses in coordination with the building inspector and the property owners, and the structures are expected to be demolished after training.
