Commissioner Jacobs proposed on Jan. 29 setting the town’s starting salary at $52,000 per year to improve recruitment and retention. Jacobs said the increase would affect only a handful of employees and that the general fund can cover the incremental cost. Vice Mayor Morissette and other commissioners expressed support and moved the item to the consent agenda.
Separately, commissioners discussed a financial‑literacy pilot program for ninth graders presented by the First Florida Credit Union. Commissioners said the credit union would provide volunteers to teach lessons about saving, budgeting and opening accounts; the program’s pilot would target 9th‑grade students and, if adopted, would be delivered in town facilities. The town attorney said establishing the program does not require a resolution and that the expenditure of public funds should be reviewed for legal compliance.
The commission directed the town manager and town attorney to review the program details — including any minimal costs, funding sources and compliance with public‑fund investment rules — and to report back with a formal recommendation. No final salary ordinance or program agreement was passed during the meeting; the items were moved to consent and to staff for review.
