Alaska DOT outlines $800M–$900M construction estimate, says shovel-ready, utility agreements determine summer bids

Chair Senator Gary Bjorkman convened the Senate Transportation Committee on Jan. 23 in Juneau and asked the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to brief the committee on the statewide transportation improvement program and project delivery.

DOT&PF Commissioner Ryan Anderson told the committee the department has “somewhere in that range” of $800 million to $900 million in estimated contract awards for the coming construction cycle if projects on the tentative advertise list are ready to be bid. He described that figure as a “high year” for the department and said prior-year contract-award totals vary.

The department said it has already executed roughly $123 million in construction contract awards this cycle and is tracking an estimated $800 million–$900 million in potential awards if projects proceed to bid. Anderson emphasized the distinction between contract awards and total project obligations, explaining that some program figures include design and other non-award costs as well as multi‑year payment schedules.
