Mayor Cindy Dickey told the Salem City Council on Jan. 28 that Rich Snyder has accepted a full-time position as the city's housing inspector. Dickey said the additional staffing should accelerate the inspection schedule compared with the prior single part-time inspector.
"I just want to congratulate Rich Snyder on his position that he accepted with the city as the full time housing inspector," Mayor Dickey said.
The council also heard that the parks department received a $50,000 grant, awarded in conjunction with the Salem Junior Baseball League, intended to be used to renovate baseball and softball fields. The interim parks director was not present because of illness but asked that the amount be shared with the council.
In public comment, resident Jim Harrington introduced himself and announced he will run in the May primary for the at-large council seat that will be open. Harrington identified himself as a longtime Salem resident who graduated from Salem High School in 1982 and said he has been back in Salem for four years after living in Chicago for 35 years.
Mayor Dickey also requested an executive session later in the meeting to discuss a contract issue and legal matters; council later voted to enter executive session.
No formal hiring vote for the housing inspector was recorded on the Jan. 28 minutes; Mayor Dickey's announcement was presented as a personnel update during the report of city officials.
