Commissioners approve highway purchases: tire machine, three-phase converter and new pickup

Randy explained the department needs a tire machine to reduce manual handling risks and address previous equipment failure while breaking a tire bead. The commissioners approved buying the tire machine from NAPA for $24,224.50; NAPA will deliver, set up and train staff.
Because the new tire machine requires three-phase power, the highway department requested a phase-converter installation rather than a full rewire. Schneider Electric provided a quote of $3,450 to supply and install a phase converter; commissioners approved that purchase.
The board also approved purchase of a three-quarter-ton Ford pickup from Watertown Ford for $51,720 to replace a 2014 pickup assigned to South Shore that the superintendent said has transmission issues. The older truck will be surplused.
Training and vendor support were confirmed: NAPA will provide training on the tire machine; Schneider will perform the converter installation. All three purchases were budgeted items, the superintendent said.
Why it matters: the equipment aims to improve workplace safety and maintain highway operations during winter road work and other maintenance tasks.
