House Education committee lists school construction aid, consolidation and mental-health supports as priorities

The Vermont House Education Committee met Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, and spent its allotted time identifying priority policy areas for the coming session, focusing on school construction aid, facilities consolidation, student mental-health services and career-technical education.

Committee leaders opened the roughly 30-minute discussion by saying school construction aid must be part of any major education package going forward and noting repeated testimony last year that the state may be operating “too many buildings,” which has created a backlog of facility needs. Committee members and witnesses also raised the rising share of social services delivered through schools and debated whether mental-health and wraparound services should be provided by school staff or by outside “designated agencies” with Medicaid-billing capacity.
