Jessica Natale, founder and coach of the Kahauiki Village Basketball League, received an honorary certificate from the Honolulu City Council for her work bringing organized youth basketball and mentorship to Kahauiki Village.
Council member Cordero and Council member Dos Santos Tam presented the certificate and described Natale as a University of Hawaii at Manoa alumna who has worked as a research assistant and clinical research specialist at the Cancer Center. According to presenters, Natale conceived the league during a COVID-19 gap year and, after outreach to the Institute for Human Services, focused the program at Kahauiki Village, a housing project in District 7 that serves families transitioning from homelessness.
The council presentation said the league serves children ages 4 to 17 and that coaches Jessica Natale and Justin Macias reported "up to 300 keiki participating". Presenters said the league provides training and life skills such as teamwork, time management and confidence, and that Natale has at times self-funded the program and solicited support from local businesses. The presenters noted Natale also brings food and other encouragement when she visits Kahauiki Village during the week.
The City Council recognized Natale "on behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu" and extended congratulations and best wishes for her continued work with the community.
