District communications staff presented proposed clarifying changes to the 1000-series policies on Jan. 27, recommending editorial and procedural adjustments rather than new substantive rules.
Key proposed edits described by Director of Communications Dr. Villareal included: - Policy 1001 (Notice of nondiscrimination): Move specific personnel contact names from the policy into the procedure so updates to names or email addresses can be made administratively rather than requiring board action. - Policy 1003 (Emergency procedures): Clarify that fire and emergency drill procedures are available in each building’s emergency operations plan rather than repeating operational language in the policy. - Policy 1101 (Goals of communication): Replace the phrase “appropriate board subcommittee” with “standing committee” for clarity on where communications planning may be reviewed. - Policy 1102 (Goals of ongoing communication): Clarify language to reflect regular, ongoing communications and remove implication that a single annual plan is the policy’s central requirement. - Policy 1405 (Solicitation in the schools): Add cross-references to the district’s fundraising policies (1409 and 1410) for clarity.
Board members had no substantive objections at the meeting. Staff said the changes are primarily clarifications; no policy adoption vote occurred on Jan. 27. If the board directs, staff will return proposed policy language for formal action at a later meeting.
