Solid-waste report: recycling revenue, landfill tonnage and glass program noted in annual update

The county’s solid-waste representative delivered the annual progress report, reporting $152,012.68 in recycling revenue for the year and 1,035.8 tons recycled. The department reported landfill disposal costs of $418,987.86 for 11,724.41 tons — an increase of about 125 tons over the previous year.
For December specifically, recycling revenue was reported as $8,034 and recycling tonnage 800 tons (figures presented on the record were not always read precisely). The representative said the glass-drop-off program is gaining usage now that awareness has increased but there are not yet long-term tonnage pools established to project volume.
The representative said staff adjusted operating hours during a recent weather event and noted safety of attendants remains a priority. She also said TDEC will host a statewide solid-waste master-plan workshop and the county intends to participate to discuss alternatives for diverting tonnage from landfills by 2035.
Committee members asked about improvements to the glass recycling site; staff said they will install a ramp or lending form similar to local newspaper-bin sites to improve accessibility and handling.
