Councilor Pruitt introduced a new ordinance intended to enforce certain state firearms-possession laws within Montgomery; council members agreed to refer the proposal to the Public Safety Committee for further consideration and outside input.
Councilor Pruitt said he would like to invite the Alabama Attorney Generals office, the district attorneys office and other stakeholders to a committee discussion to determine whether the proposed local ordinance is appropriate and enforceable. “I would like to invite the attorney general's office. I'd like to invite the DA's office. I would like to invite all the players in this thing to figure out, you know, is this the right ordinance or not?” Pruitt said.
Council members discussed the prior iteration of a related ordinance and whether the new draft should come before committee for additional review. The council president directed that the ordinance be placed in the Public Safety Committee; members on that committee were identified during the meeting.
Ending: The ordinance will return to the full council after the Public Safety Committee meets and receives input from invited legal and prosecutorial stakeholders.
