The Montgomery City Architectural Review Board on Oct. 12 approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for repairs at 540 Clay Street in the Cottage Hill neighborhood that will replace rotten t-111 siding behind existing standing-seam metal and restore proper flashing and textured hardy board.
Applicant Doug Burkhalter described removal of sections of siding behind the front gable areas to allow for proper flashing and to repair rotten sheathing. He told the board the proposal would not change the building’s look, color, or decorative elements and that the fish-scale shingles at the gable peak would remain.
Board members discussed the choice of material and the visual effect at the location. One member said hardy siding is acceptable at that site and another said the proposed work appears to be maintenance and repair rather than an aesthetic change. After a brief public comment period with no objections, a board member moved to approve the work as submitted; the motion was seconded and carried. The transcript does not record vote counts.
The applicant may proceed with the repair work as approved.
