The West Valley School District Board of Directors voted unanimously on Jan. 28 to approve first readings of five policy updates addressing health, volunteer access and transportation.
The board approved, on a 5‑0 voice vote, first readings for policy 3414 (infectious disease), 3420 (anaphylaxis prevention and response), 3424 (opioid‑related overdose reversal), 5005 (employment and volunteers) and 6600 (transportation). Board member Michael Thorner made the motion to approve all five first readings; the motion carried 5‑0.
District staff described each change. Policy 3414 replaces a reference to OSPI guidance with the Department of Health as the source of infectious‑disease guidance. Policy 3420 clarifies anaphylaxis prevention, adds dairy as a listed allergen consideration and refines distribution of emergency care plans. Policy 3424 authorizes availability of opioid overdose reversal medication (Narcan) at each school and specifies that a student will not be disciplined for administering Narcan in good faith to save another student. Policy 5005 adds a definition of “unsupervised access to children” for volunteer and employment screening. Policy 6600 incorporates language tied to RCW9A52092 related to school bus trespass from the most recent legislative session.
The board’s action was to approve first readings; these are the initial policy approvals required by board process and do not by themselves finalize any permanent policy changes. The vote on the first readings was recorded as aye by Michael Thorner, James Kephart, Mark Strong, Joel Heade and Steve Wolcott.
