A North Amityville resident asked the Town of Babylon Board on Jan. 29 to address chronic sewer and stormwater problems on Poplar Road, and to update the board on plans to improve the Amityville pool and nearby park space.
Latrelle Story, who identified herself as living at 10 Poplar Road in Amityville, said the sewers in her neighborhood are blocked, that stormwater regularly floods the street in front of her home after rain, and that wastewater sometimes backs up into sinks and tubs inside houses. She asked the town to investigate and clean the drains.
Supervisor Schaffer replied that the town had her contact information and flagged Vinny Piccoli, whom he identified in the meeting as the commissioner of the Department of Public Works, to work with Story and neighbors to inspect the drains and, if necessary, involve Suffolk County because the issue may involve the sewer district. Schaffer said he expects highway engineering to examine the street pitch.
On parks and the Amityville pool, Schaffer said the town has concepts under development and that Tony Martinez, chairman of the parks committee, is working on proposals. Schaffer noted that part of the property near the pool — behind 555 Albany Avenue and adjacent to Liberty Village — was split off and given to the town by the federal government to provide additional park space. He said park improvements being considered include refurbishing the ACE Center, adding field space, and new playgrounds; Schaffer also referenced a recently installed playground at the North Amityville Youth Center requested by Sonji Clark, the center’s director.
Why it matters: chronic drainage and sewer backups affect resident safety, property conditions and daily life; park and pool upgrades are local quality-of-life issues for families and youth.
What the board did: the transcript shows town staff were asked to follow up. Vinny Piccoli (Department of Public Works) and highway engineering were identified as responsible parties; the town said it would involve Suffolk County if the sewer district is implicated. No formal vote or budget action on repairs or park construction was recorded during this meeting.
Ending: Story said she appreciated the attention; town officials said they would follow up and keep her informed.
