Proposed 2025–26 calendar front-loads teacher workdays; Burke Middle College schedule retains state flexibility

Mister Recker presented the draft 2025–26 school calendar, walking the board through legal requirements and the district’s proposed dates. The draft spans the required 215 calendar days, proposes a first student day of August 25 and a final student day of May 29, and estimates about 1,085.5 instructional hours with roughly 60.5 banked hours for inclement-weather use.
Recker said the proposal puts more teacher workdays before students return — including an August 11 mandatory workday and additional workdays in the weeks leading up to school — with the intent of allowing staff more time to prepare. He explained the district still complies with the state’s statutory requirements for minimum instruction and required holidays.
The calendar designer noted the district sought feedback from administrators, a teacher council and neighboring districts; the draft aims to give larger, even-length semesters where possible and to place semester exams before the winter break. Recker said the plan would preserve time for AP and other courses that need more instruction in the spring.
Board discussion covered the state calendar law and alternatives. Recker explained that other districts in North Carolina have started earlier than state guidance in recent years, but that doing so can prompt legal challenges and court orders in some cases. Doctor Abernathy (Burke Middle College) reminded the board that Burke Middle College is an approved innovative high-school program and therefore has statutory calendar flexibility because it aligns to the community college schedule; Middle College’s proposed calendar reflected Western Piedmont Community College term dates and starts earlier to permit college orientation.
Ending: Recker said the draft calendar will be posted for the board’s action at the next meeting; he asked board members whether to place the draft on the consent agenda or as a separate action item. Board members also asked staff to consider teacher conference timing and the balance of early-year workdays versus in-term staff time.
