BOCES board approves immediate cuts; sells property and sets meeting calendar

The BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) report to the Natrona County School District No. 1 board on Feb. 3 detailed financial updates, a recent property sale and a set of immediate cost-saving measures the BOCES board approved.
Representatives said bills approved to be paid totaled $95,102 and cash accounts at BOCES totaled $571,674 after a recent property sale. The property on the mountain sold for $599,000, and the board reported a $274,062 revenue payment from the county for October 2024 that was received just before a meeting but not included in that month’s financial report. The board also noted a possible FY24 overpayment from the county of about $23,000 that may need to be repaid.
An ad hoc budget-reduction committee recommended immediate cuts that the BOCES board approved, including: discontinuing payment for summer courses taken by students who have already graduated (estimated savings about $68,000); eliminating graduate stipends for Casper College faculty (estimated savings about $15,600); not funding the Quantum Science Summer School in FY26 (the FY25 allocation was $24,000 but only about $4,000 was used); eliminating a $100,000 reserve from the FY25 budget; and ending BOCES funding for the STAR program starting next year (Casper College secured alternative funding for STAR).
The BOCES board also approved a $7,692 grant request for the Sign Fest project, a partnership between the district and Casper College supporting American Sign Language classes and activities. New BOCES officers were elected and meeting dates set for the 3rd Monday of each month at 4 p.m., with exceptions for January and February due to holidays.
